NDT – Non Destructive Testing

NDT – Non Destructive Testing for Welding

There are four types of non-destructive testing available:

. Testing

Dye Penetrant

Made up of a white absorbent material and red dye. For welds and surfaces without paint and dirt, this is the least sensitive of the testing methods used.

Magnetic Particle

Uses a background lacquer and spray on black magnetic ink or powder. Fluorescent dye and ultraviolet light can also be used, but the test must be in darkness. Principally used for larger areas but can be used where surface or weld is clean and free of paint and dirt.

Eddy Current

For sensitive work on welds primarily, the surface to be tested can be painted, but must be free of dirt.

Ultrasonic

Used on new welds to check the actual weld from the root out to the face of the weld. Surface must be smooth and free of paint and dirt etc. Can be used to determine shafts and pins and bolts for length, and for discontinuities within.
